Why October is a poor time for Quetzal viewing

Uncategorized

It is less likely to see a quetzal in Monteverde in October compared to the breeding season, which runs from February to June. The prime viewing months are March and April when the birds are most active due to breeding and nesting. During October, quetzals typically migrate to lower elevations as they search for wild avocados, their main food source.

However, October is considered migration season in Monteverde, making it a good time for birdwatching in general, as other unique migratory species pass through. It is still possible to see quetzals during the Green (rainy) Season, which extends from May to November, especially in the early morning. Hiring a local guide who knows the quetzal’s behavior and preferred locations can increase your chances of a sighting.

Why October is a poor time for Quetzal viewing

  • Breeding Season: The peak viewing season for Resplendent Quetzals is from February to July, coinciding with their nesting and breeding periods.

Food Availability:

Quetzals are most active when their favorite food, wild avocados, are in peak supply, which is during their breeding season.

Altitudinal Migration:

Quetzals migrate to different altitudes in search of their food sources. In October, they are often in other areas, away from the cloud forest nesting sites, making them harder to find.

What to expect in October

  • Rainy Season: October is one of the wettest months in Monteverde, making it lush and green but also potentially difficult to spot birds due to heavy rain.

Shy Birds:

Quetzals are inherently elusive and shy birds. Seeing one outside of their breeding season is even more challenging.

Tips for future Quetzal viewing

  • Visit during the Breeding Season: For the best chances of seeing Quetzals, plan your visit between February and July.

Hire a Local Guide: Quetzal-watching is best done with a local guide who knows the best spots and can help you spot these elusive birds. Go Early in the Morning: Quetzals are most active in the quiet hours of the early morning.
