Marco tulio Brenes was born Dec. 4, 1966 in the province of Puntarenas, and grew up in the foothills adjacent to the cloud forest in Monteverde, which serves as a continual source of inspiration. In 1985, he apprenticed with two famous wood crafters: Barry Biesanz and Rololfo Morales, who helped Marco further his artistic professionalism. Marco also studied at the well-known Casa del Artista (House of the Artist) in San Jose.
Dedicated to art for more than 12 years, Marco continues developing his talents of wood relief and turning, painting, ceramics and others. Beginning in 1993, he has devoted a large part of his time to teaching art in his community with such organizations as the Monteverde Institute and the Monteverde Studios of the Arts. At the same time, he has gained national and international attention for his craftsmanship, and was recently awarded "Best Piece Neo-Artesan" in the FERCORI National Crafts Fair.
Marco yearns to foster harmony between nature and humankind by salvaging old wooden fence posts and decomposing woods partially affected by himidity, fungi, and insects, and transforming them into exquisite boxes, bowls and sculptures.
Frequently, Marco must select and work woods with surgical care because his raw materials are often fragile and unpredictable.
In his desire to reduce and/or avoid the use of endangered tropical woods, Marco has been a pioneer in the search for new beautiful fine woods that have not been used previously by other craftsmen.
With his professional techniques and natural finishes, the wood will retain its beauty for a great length of time. In his conscious use of resources, Marco allows the tropical forests to grow and fill us with life and inspiration.
The Gallery offers three stories of year-round exhibits in an unusual contruction of his design. Balconies and stairs climb outside the gallery, allowing one to peer into the canopy and refresh before reaching another floor. Join us in this unique setting and experience some of Costa Rica's most stunning artwork.
