Santa Elena Reserve

The Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve is one of the first community managed reserves in Costa Rica, and is linked to the Santa Elena high school. It is dedicated to the conservation and the upgrading of local education. The total land of this reserve is 889-acre and the maximun elevation is 5510 ft. with 8 miles of hiking trails

This Reserve has 12 km of trails which meander through constant light mists, caused by the rising trade winds, creating a magical green world of epiphyte, laden trees, ferns and flowers. Here too are the headwaters of the chiquito and cano Negro rivers – major water sources of the Arenal lake hydroelectric scheme.

Operates:
The Reserve is open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Natural history walks start everyday at 7:30 AM.

The duration of the Natural History Walk is approx. 3 hours.

Booking Options:
Book the Natural History Walks at your hotel tour office one day in advance.

If you are not doing the Natural History Walks you don´t need a reservation, you just need go to the park and pay the entrance fee. Remember that there are more chances to see animals during the mornings.

Starts:
Natural history walks start everyday at 7:30 AM at the reserves front desk.
There is no transportation included on this tour.

Ends:
Tour ends at approximately 3 hours after the tour starts at the monteverde cloud forest reserve front desk.

Meals
There are no meals with any of the tours. There is however, a small cafeteria next to the front desk.

Tips
You can take the natural history tour for $15 plus the entrance fee, or simply pay the fee and walk throughout the forest on your own.

On this natural history walk, you will have more chances of seeing interesting things and understanding the forest with the help of a tour guide.

After the natural history walk, if you still have energy, you can continue walking on other short distance trails. It is a good idea to have some lunch before go back into the forest.

Remember that the entrance fee ticket is valid for one whole day so you can go on and off the paths and walk on your own any time you want during the day.

• Daily Transportation leaves at 7:00AM from National Bank at $2 one way. The reserve also offer a Canopy tower, Interpretation Center, Guided Tours, Self-Guided Trail, Souvenir Shop, Coffee Shop, Hummingbird Feeders and Boots for Rent.

• Looking northeast on clear days, you can see the spectacular view of the Arenal Volcano. In 1986 Arenal began a phase of intense eruptions which continues to this day.
