Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve

The Monteverde Reserve has 13 kilometers of paths and trails open daily to visitors in an area called The Triangle. This area covers 2% of the Preserve. The paths start at the entrance of the Preserve with two trails to the north and west of the Triangle that lead to the shelters in the cloud forest and may be used under special circumstances.

Natural History Walks, include a 22 minute slide show and a guided tour in the cloud forest, with an experienced nature guide. The walk starts at 7.30 a.m.

Nature Walks with or without specialized guide. You may choose among different paths. There are nature paths that can last between 25 minutes and 6 hours to complete.

The Preserve is open all year from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Natural history walks are start everyday at 7:30 AM.

Monteverde: 5 Km from Santa Elena Town. There is only one way to get there so you won't get lost

Duration:
Natural history Walks 3 hours. If you decide not to take this tour, the duration of your nature walk can change depending on the path you choose. There are nature paths that can last between 25 minutes and 6 hours to complete.

Booking Options:
Book the Natural History Walks at your hotel tour office one day in advance.

If you are not doing the Natural History Walks you don´t need a reservation, you just need to go to the park and pay the entrance fee. Remember that there are more chances to see animals during the mornings.

Starts:
Natural history walks start everyday at 7:30 AM at the reserves front desk.
There is no transportation included on this tour.

Ends:
Tour ends at approximately 3 hours after the tour starts, at the monteverde cloud forest reserve front desk.

Tips
You can take the natural history tour for $15 plus the entrance fee, or simply pay the fee and walk throughout the forest on your on.

On this natural history walk, you will have a better chance of seeing interesting things and understanding the forest with the help of a tour guide.

After the natural history walk, if you still have energy, you can continue walking among other short distance trails. It is a good idea to have some lunch before go back into the forest.

Remember that the entrance fee ticket is valid for one whole day so you can go on and off the paths and walk on your own any time you want during the day.

• Bus service from Santa Elena to the Reserve leaves at the following hours: 6:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.; returning from the Reserve to Santa Elena at 11:15 a.m, and 4:00 p.m. Taxicab service is also available in Santa Elena.

• You can reach the Reserve by a regular two-wheel traction car, however, double traction (four by four) vehicles are best suited to the mountainous roads that lead there.
